Start with a defensible baseline
For a short emergency, the easiest water to rely on is water already stored safely at home. U.S. emergency-preparedness guidance commonly uses one gallon per person per day for drinking and sanitation as a starting point. That gives a four-person household a baseline of 12 gallons for three days, 28 gallons for seven days and 56 gallons for fourteen days.
Those numbers are not a promise that one gallon will be enough in every situation. Hot weather, strenuous activity, pregnancy, illness and some medical needs can push drinking-water requirements upward. Pets need their own allowance too. The practical lesson is to calculate a baseline and then add a margin that reflects your household.
How to store it without creating another problem
Use containers designed for food or drinking water and keep them away from fuels, pesticides and other chemicals. Large containers are space-efficient but become extremely heavy when full: water weighs a little over eight pounds per U.S. gallon. Several smaller containers can therefore be easier to move and rotate than one enormous tank.
Commercially bottled water is convenient because it arrives sealed. Home-filled containers give you more control over size and cost, but cleaning, filling and storage practices matter. Follow current public-health guidance for the container type you choose.
Build a layered plan
Storage solves the first part of the problem. A longer interruption needs a second layer: perhaps a functioning private well with safe backup power, delivered water, or another lawful source.
