Start with watt-hours

Write down each essential device, its wattage and expected daily runtime. A 10-watt light used for five hours is 50 watt-hours. A 100-watt device used for five hours is 500 watt-hours. Adding those loads gives you a much better starting point than shopping by solar-panel size alone.

Why ordinary rooftop solar may shut off in an outage

The U.S. Department of Energy notes that many grid-connected solar systems are designed to shut down when grid power fails for safety. Backup operation generally requires a properly configured inverter and storage or another approved islanding arrangement.

Battery capacity is not all usable

Nameplate capacity, battery chemistry, allowable depth of discharge, temperature and inverter losses all affect how much useful energy reaches appliances. Design around usable energy and critical loads rather than the biggest battery number on a product page.

Surge loads matter

Refrigerators, pumps and some tools can draw much more power for a moment when motors start. The inverter has to handle that surge even if the normal running wattage looks modest.

Reduce the load before enlarging the system

Efficiency is often cheaper than generation. LED lighting, sensible refrigeration use and choosing which appliances truly need backup can dramatically reduce the battery and inverter required.
